Sheena was detained in a holding cell in Buka, Bougainville, for 8 months under horrific conditions. Apparently the objective was to break her spirit and gain revenge by total humiliation.

Sheena wasn’t allowed to contact family including her two sons, friends or call a lawyer

She was denied any change of clothing for months.

She wasn’t allowed fresh air, access to daylight and food was extremely poor.

There was compulsory 24hr lighting, no fans, and no mosquito screening in this mosquito infested and malaria ravaged region.

(My comment: Takes a tough spirit to survive those conditions when you know you are innocent, and your oppressors corrupt.)

For the first 15 days in custody, Sheena was not cautioned or read her rights.

After 6 months, Sheena was able to get a handwritten plea for help out to her family. This note details the multiple breaches of her human rights that occurred in Bougainville, and is a testament to her strength of character that she was able to produce such a coherent statement during her ordeal.
